|According to the US Treasury Department’s statistics, Russia’s holdings of US treasuries dropped by USD 0.5bn, or 0.6% month-on-month in December 2016 to USD 86.1bn, or 1.4% of the total treasury securities amount reaching USD 6,003.9trln (2.3% down from December 2015). |
In the latest US Treasury report, Russia took the 16th slot on the list of largest holders of US government debt. The amount of Russian investments is comparable to such US treasuries holders as Korea (USD 93.2bn), Canada (USD 83bn), Germany (USD 82.2bn). Based on December results, the lender list was topped by Japan with USD 1,090.8bn worth of UST holdings, or 18.2% of the total UST amount outstripping the previous leader - China - by USD 32.4bn. Mainland China was number two with USD 1,058.4bn posting a 15% drop from December 2015. Ireland kept the third line with just USD 288.2bn.
Therefore, Japan and China together control 35.8% of the US government debt in the form of US treasury securities bought by foreign states. The total amount of US treasuries added 1% month-on-month in December.
